Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT)

A Body-Based Approach to Calm the Nervous System and Release Emotional Distress

Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT), often called tapping, is an evidence-informed, mind–body therapy that helps reduce emotional distress by combining gentle tapping on acupressure points with focused attention on thoughts, emotions, or memories.

EFT works directly with the nervous system—helping your body move out of fight-or-flight and into a calmer, more regulated state—so healing doesn’t rely on talking alone.

How EFT Works

EFT integrates elements of:

  • Exposure therapy (bringing awareness to distressing thoughts or memories)

  • Cognitive reframing (shifting unhelpful beliefs)

  • Somatic regulation (calming the nervous system through physical input.

While you focus on a specific issue, you tap on a sequence of acupressure points (primarily on the face and upper body). This combination signals safety to the brain, reducing emotional intensity and allowing the memory or belief to be processed differently.

In plain language:  Your brain learns that the trigger is no longer a threat.

What EFT Can Help With

EFT has been used successfully to support clients experiencing:

  • Anxiety and panic

  • PTSD and trauma-related symptoms

  • Chronic stress and burnout

  • Phobias and performance anxiety

  • Depression and negative self-beliefs

  • Chronic pain and psychosomatic symptoms

  • Grief, loss, and emotional overwhelm

EFT can be used as a stand-alone intervention or integrated with other therapies such as EMDR, somatic therapy, or parts work.

What the Research Says

EFT isn’t just popular—it’s studied.

Key research findings include:

  • Anxiety Reduction: Multiple randomized controlled trials show EFT produces large reductions in anxiety, often outperforming talk therapy and relaxation techniques.

  • PTSD Outcome: Clinical studies have found that 60–90% of participants no longer met criteria for PTSD after a course of EFT sessions, with results maintained at follow-up.

  • Cortisol (Stress Hormone) Reduction: A landmark study found that a single hour of EFT led to an average 24–43% reduction in cortisol levels, significantly greater than talk therapy or rest alone.

  • Depression & Emotional Distress: Meta-analyses show EFT produces moderate to large effect sizes for depression, emotional distress, and somatic symptoms.

  • Durability of Results: Improvements from EFT have been shown to persist for months to years after treatment, suggesting lasting nervous-system change rather than temporary relief.

EFT is recognized as an evidence-based practice by multiple professional organizations and continues to be researched in clinical and medical settings.

Why Clients Appreciate EFT

Clients often choose EFT because it is:

  • Gentle and non-invasive

  • Fast-acting for emotional intensity

  • Empowering (skills can be used between sessions)

  • Effective even when words are hard to find

  • Supportive for both emotional and physical symptoms

Many people report feeling calmer during the session—not just after.

What an EFT Session Looks Like

In session, your therapist will:

  1. Help you identify a specific issue, feeling, or memory

  2. Guide you through the tapping sequence

  3. Monitor emotional intensity and nervous system response

  4. Adjust the process to stay within your window of tolerance

  5. Integrate insights, grounding, and closure

You remain fully present and in control the entire time.

EFT as Part of Trauma-Informed Care

For trauma survivors, EFT offers a way to work with difficult material without becoming overwhelmed. Because it directly calms the nervous system, it can be especially helpful when traditional talk therapy feels too activating—or not effective enough.

EFT can be used:

  • In early stabilization and preparation phases

  • Alongside EMDR or other trauma therapies

  • As a regulation tool during high-stress periods

Is EFT Right for You?

EFT may be a good fit if you:

  • Feel emotionally “stuck” despite insight

  • Experience anxiety or stress in your body

  • Want tools you can use outside of therapy

  • Prefer a gentle, body-based approach

  • Have tried talk therapy and want something more integrative
