Group Therapy FAQs

What is group therapy?

Group therapy is a form of counseling led by a licensed therapist where a small group of people come together to learn, share experiences, and support one another in a safe, confidential environment.

How is group therapy different from a support group?

Support groups are often peer-led and focus primarily on shared experiences. Our therapy groups are facilitated by licensed mental health professionals who provide education, guide discussions, teach practical skills, and create structured therapeutic experiences designed to promote lasting growth.

Do I have to talk during every session?

No. Participation is encouraged, but you'll never be pressured to share more than you're comfortable sharing. Many participants begin by listening and gradually become more involved as they feel safe.

Are online therapy groups effective?

Yes. Research has shown that online group therapy can be highly effective for many mental health concerns. Many participants appreciate the convenience, privacy, and accessibility of joining from home while still experiencing meaningful connection with others.

Can I join if I already have an individual therapist?

Absolutely. Many participants attend group therapy alongside individual counseling. With your permission, we can also coordinate care with your therapist if appropriate.

How do I know which group is right for me?

Each group has a different purpose and focus. If you're unsure which group best fits your needs, we're happy to schedule a brief consultation to help you explore your options.

Are the groups confidential?

Yes. Maintaining confidentiality is an important part of creating a safe group environment. While all participants agree to respect one another's privacy, confidentiality cannot be absolutely guaranteed because other group members are not employees of the practice.
