Internal Family Systems
Parts Work for Trauma, Anxiety & Emotional Healing
Internal Family Systems (IFS), often referred to as “parts work,” is a therapy approach that helps clients understand the different internal parts or protective responses that develop throughout life experiences.
Many people notice internal conflict within themselves. One part may want closeness while another pushes people away. One part may strive for perfection while another feels exhausted, ashamed, or emotionally overwhelmed.
At EMDR Counseling Collective, we use IFS-informed therapy to help clients better understand these internal patterns with greater curiosity, awareness, and self-compassion.
IFS Therapy May Help With:
- Trauma and PTSD
- Anxiety
- Shame and self-criticism
- Emotional overwhelm
- Relationship struggles
- Childhood trauma
- Attachment wounds
- Dissociation
- Identity confusion
- Perfectionism and people-pleasing
What Are “Parts”?
IFS views many emotional and behavioral patterns as protective parts that developed to help individuals survive difficult experiences.
Examples may include:
- An inner critic
- A perfectionistic part
- A people-pleasing part
- A protective angry part
- A shutdown or numb part
- Younger wounded parts carrying fear or shame
Therapy helps clients understand these parts rather than fight against them.
IFS & Trauma Therapy
IFS is commonly integrated with trauma-focused approaches such as EMDR and somatic therapy. By helping protective parts feel safer, clients can process painful experiences without becoming as emotionally overwhelmed or disconnected.
